Distance Envy
I may dislike Manny Ramirez' team (and fanbase) but I have nothing but the utmost of respect for the best offensive outfielder in the American League for the past 9 seasons. After Manny's long drive to left field was robbed by Yankee outfielder Melky Cabrera, Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz had this to say:"That's why I hit mine 500 feet," Ortiz said. "Then I don't have to deal with that."Actually, no. Both gentlemen drove the ball 399 feet, but Ortiz' shot went to the short porch in right while Manny's went to left centerfield, one of the deepest spots in the park. 4 Comments:
"Hit" is used in the present tense here. Papi is saying he prefers to hit them 500' to avoid the Melky treatment; not that he hit that particular shot 500'. By , at 11:49 PM It's all about direction. Manny actually hits his average homer farther than Ortiz (412 ft to 399 ft) but Ortiz gets more homeruns from right field short porches and Pesky poles. Who is this "Anonymous" loser that bashes Beantown? Show your face pinko! He or she is a true American hero. |
