Today is Buy Nothing Day, a peaceful protest against consumerism. Why be against consumerism in these economically-troubling times? Got me. I guess people perceive that the excessive consumption of Americans is taking a toll on the Earth's resources. Not that I care about saving the Earth...after all, the Earth can take care of itself...but I do care about keeping it clean and healthy enough that it can sustain human life for at least another 1,000,000 years. But I don't think anyone can change the average American's consumer habits directly, nor do I think anyone in a free, capitalist society should try to change them. It's nice, though, to stop and think about things we buy that are obviously unnecessary...like the George Foreman grill, People magazine, a point-and-shoot camera when you've already got three, or that new Mick Jagger CD. Frankly, I wasn't planning on buying anything today except for a delicious sushi lunch and possibly a six-pack for "later". 0 Comments:
